Why You Will Get Two Social Security Checks in December
Since December is a giving month, the Social Security Administration will send out two checks instead of one for the month. As long as it’s the right kind of check. Okay, so the SSA isn’t really Santa Claus. Once every three months, the agency gives out two checks in the same month. December is one of those months.
Folks who are eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will get the two checks. The SSA says that the first SSI check will be sent out on Friday, December 1. The second one will come out on Friday, December 29, four weeks after the first one.
Because of a glitch in the payment system, people who get SSI get two payouts in March, June, September, and December, but none in January, April, July, or October. During the last four months, one check is sent out. You can think of the extra payment you made in December as a deposit for the following month.
According to the SSA, you should wait three more sending days before calling the agency if you don’t get your payment on the due date. If you get paid through direct deposit, you should get your money on time, but it may depend on your bank’s access.
SSI benefits are given to blind people, people aged 65 or older, people with limited means who are low-income and have a qualifying disability. Someone has a qualifying disability if they can’t work and the disability is likely to last for one year or cause death.
The federal maximum SSI benefit rate for a single person in 2023 is $914, and the highest rate for a couple is $1,371. Both of those numbers will go up to $943 and $1,415 in 2024.
In December 2023, the plan for retirement benefits will be the same as it is every other month. Based on your date of birth, you will get your retirement benefits on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month. Take a look at the December payment plan:
- If your birthday is between January 1st and October 10th, you’ll get paid on December 13th, which is the second Wednesday of the month.
- You’ll get paid on the third Wednesday (Dec. 20) if your birthday is between November 11 and December 20.
- Birthday people born between December 21 and December 31 will be paid on December 27.
- If you got Social Security before May 1997 or get both Social Security and SSI, you will get your payment on December.
With an 8.7% cost-of-living change in 2023, December will be the last month that people who get Social Security will get payments. This is the biggest increase in more than 40 years. There will be a 3.2% COLA added to retirement checks starting in January 2024. This will make the average retirement check about $57 more a month.
